Police Cooperation Convention for South East Europe

The point of departure for this project was a meeting of high-level representatives of the states of South East Europe on 22 and 23 June 2005 in Vienna where, during an opening workshop, the main themes of the planned convention were agreed.

On the basis of the Convention applying the Schengen Agreement and of existing bilateral cooperation agreements, the following areas of cooperation in particular were identified:

  • Improvement of information exchange, for instance in the area of combating illegal migration;
  • Introduction and reinforcement of cross-border forms of cooperation, such as cross-border observation or pursuit, controlled delivery and covert investigation;
  • Further measures such as the establishment of joint investigation teams and the exchange of DNA data and other identifying characteristics.

The target group of the police convention and thus also future participants in the convention are the following states of South East Europe: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania and Serbia and Montenegro.
