EU-Latin America and the Caribbean Summits of Heads of State and Government

Guadalajara Summit

(Guadalajara Summit 2004)

Today there are already sixty States participating in the EU-LAC process: 33 States from Latin America and the Caribbean, 25 EU Member Countries, as well as the Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania.

The first Summit Meeting of the EU and LAC Heads of State and Government took place on the 28th and 29th of June 1999, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rio Final Declaration

The objective of the Rio Summit was to strengthen the political, economic and cultural understanding between the two regions, in order to encourage the development of a strategic partnership. There was agreement in Rio to hold a follow-up Summit, which then took place on 17 and 18 of May in Madrid, Spain. This Summit assessed progress made in the framework of the strategic partnership established at Rio, emphasising progress in the three main pillars of the relationship: political dialogue, economic and financial relations including trade and capital, and co-operation in a number of areas. On this occasion, new proposals were made for the further strengthening of the bi-regional partnership.

Madrid Final Declaration

The third EU-LAC Summit took place in Guadalajara (Mexico) on 28 May 2004. The ten new EU member countries participated for the first time. Special emphasis was given to three domains: Social cohesion, Multilateralism and Regional Integration.

Guadalajara Final Declaration

The planned fourth Summit in the context of the Austrian EU Presidency will pursue the bi-regional strategic partnership between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean.
