Specialised dialogues between the EU and specific regions and states

(© Ekkehard Wimmer)

The MERCOSUR (Mercado Común del Sur), the Andean Community and the SICA (Integration System of Central America) represent the three main regional integration processes in the Latin American region.

The dialogue between the EU and these regional organizations constitutes a key component of the relations and reflects the importance attached by the EU to regional integration as a vehicle to foster better understanding between neighbouring countries and to forge multilateralism in the long term.

The EU is linked to the Caribbean countries in the framework of an ACP (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific) – EU agreement, the Cotonou Agreement 2000.

The EU concluded Association Agreements with free trade clauses with Chile and Mexico, which do not belong to any of the sub-regional integration spaces. There is also a regular political dialogue between the EU and each of these countries.
