EU-LAC High Level Conference ”Promoting social cohesion: the EU, Latin American and Caribbean experiences”

Venue

Brussels (Belgium)

Date

27-28 March 2006

Organisation

European Commission (DG External Relations, DG Employment)

Participants

Around 200 persons from both regions: civil society, business, academics, trade unions, international organisations and governments officials.

Themes

At the Guadalajara Summit, the EU and Latin American/Caribbean Heads of State named social cohesion as a shared goal and priority area of their relations. In the context of globalisation, the promotion of social cohesion is intended to build more cohesive societies by giving everyone the chance to have access to fundamental rights and employment, to enjoy the benefits of economic growth and social progress and thereby play a full role in society. The promotion of social cohesion is fundamental to the fight against poverty and inequality.

This High Level Conference responds to both regions’ objective of developing a constructive dialogue and co-operation on promotion of social cohesion. It will bring together key political players from the EU and Latin American and the Caribbean countries, as well from the most relevant international organisations. It is intended to promote a mutually beneficial and enriching sharing of experiences and good practices.
