Does Europe Protect Human Rights?

The working lunch "Does Europe protect Human Rights?" focused on what can be done in practice to protect human rights, both in Europe and globally.  Partnerships and Association Agreements were discussed, as these agreements are recognized as having strong human rights clauses; however, the consensus was that making these clauses operational, enforceable and able to be monitored is a challenge that remains.  The differences between collective rights and individual human rights were discussed in depth, as were EU interests versus principles.  The lunch concluded with a challenge to Europe to lead by example and a continued exploration of how to protect human rights in practice.
