The final Debate. Conducting Europe

Logo Sound of Europe

Whether ‘The Sound of Europe’ will be heard again in all its beauty, whether ‘Europe. A Beautiful Idea’ really has any chance of being attained, depends to a large extent on whether Europe’s political leaders succeed in appropriating the European idea and in converting that vision into policy.

What do the politicians want? What can politicians achieve in a democracy that is dominated by short-termism and the mass media? What is politicians’ answer to the resurgence of populism and nationalism? To what extent should they accept responsibility for the crisis that has arisen? How can they build bridges and at the same time display political leadership? What will they do to convert words and conclusions into the deeds that the European Union will need so badly in the future?

Panel:
Jan Peter Balkenende, José Manuel Barroso, Wolfgang Schüssel, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Matti Vanhanen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Jürgen Flimm
Moderator: Roger de Weck
