Forestry policy

Action plan for the forestry strategy

There is no provision for a comprehensive common forestry policy in the EU Treaties. The management, conservation and sustainable development of forests are nevertheless vital concerns of the CAP. The EU forestry strategy was adopted as a result, firstly, of the growing awareness of the relationship between the forestry policies of the Member States and forestry-related activities at EU level and, secondly, the increasing importance of forests in international policy debates and in sustainable development initiatives. In spring 2006, the Commission will submit the EU Action Plan for Sustainable Forest Management setting out measures to implement the EU Forestry Strategy.
