Rupel: Alpine-Adria region a model of regional collaboration

Dimitrij Rupel (Slovenian Foreign Minister) considered subsidiarity from the point of view of the key elements of balance, division of tasks and better performance. Besides the "big" subsidiarity debate which deals with unity in diversity and supranational inter-country issues, in his view the numerous minor subsidiarity issues must also be considered: collaboration on cultural, linguistic and minority questions. Precisely in solving these practical problems, the Euro region Alpine-Adria could have an exemplary effect. Rupel perceived in this an instrument for clearing up misunderstandings and creating ties. He reiterated that Slovenia had, back in the days of the former Yugoslavia, maintained active cooperation with its neighbours. Moreover, an independent Euro region with its centre in Ljubljana could become a potential centre for EU institutions, he believed.
