Schmit: EU needs to justify itself anew to EU citizens

Nicolas Schmit (Luxembourg's Deputy Foreign Minister) stressed that Europe had to justify itself anew against the background of the current crisis. Following the two referenda in France and the Netherlands, the debate over subsidiarity had now become all the more important, since EU citizens had the feeling that the decision-making processes were passing them by. This was often merely an impression and did not always correspond to reality, but in politics, impressions were actually more important than reality. In Schmit's estimation, a lot still had to be done in order to anchor the EU back in the minds of its citizens. Most of all, Europe had to be rebuilt at the level of the Union, the Member States and the regions, and here, the most important thing was to give competencies to the regions, said Schmit.
