In the context of the Austrian Presidency, the European Commission-initiated 5th Round Table of Bankers and SMEs will be opened on 15 May 2006 at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. Between 70 and 80 participants are expected to attend the high-level meeting.

At the meeting, high-ranking representatives of European SME and banking federations will engage in discussion with the European Commission and the Austrian Presidency - particularly in light of the Basel II provisions which will come into force in 2007 - on the relationship between SMEs and banks in Europe and measures to promote mutual understanding.

The main topics on the agenda of the 5th Round Table of Bankers and SMEs will be:

  1. Increasing the transparency of relationships between banks and SMEs in the light of a new financial environment (Basel II)
  2. Mezzanine financing and other innovative financial instruments, enterprise transfers
  3. Securitisation - a financial instrument for SMEs?

In the context of the Round Table of Bankers and SMEs, a meeting of the technical working group will also be held in the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber on 16 May 2006 in order to discuss the third main topic - securitisation. 20-25 experts from European SME and banking federations are expected to take part in the meeting.
