Statements in International Organisations

09.02.2006

OSCE Permanent Council No. 592

EU Statement on Recent Events in Reaction to Publication of Cartoons

  1. The EU is deeply concerned about recent events arising from the publication of a number of cartoon images within the EU and certain other participating States. The European Union strongly condemns the wave of attacks and threats against European citizens and property, which culminated in attacks against diplomatic missions and other premises. Such attacks can by no means be legitimised and are utterly unacceptable.
  2. In this context the European Union would like to draw the attention of the Permanent Council to the contents of two statements by the Presidency, issued on 4 and 6 February, the statement of the OSCE Chairman in Office on 7 February as well as the Joint Statement by the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union made on 7 February 2006.
  3. The European Union looks forward to participating in the meeting which the Chair will convene next week, on 16 February, on this important issue.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, EFTA countries Iceland and Liechtenstein, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

*Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
