Statements in International Organisations

02.02.2006

OSCE Permanent Council No. 590

EU Statement on South Ossetia, Georgia

  1. The EU is very concerned about the incident that took place in the zone of conflict in South Ossetia, Georgia, on 31 January 2006, in which a road traffic accident between a truck from the Joint Peacekeeping Forces and a Georgian car escalated into a situation of high tension between JPKF servicemen and Georgian servicemen.
  2. The fact that a minor incident in the zone of conflict led to a dangerously tense situation is alarming. It heightens our concern about the security situation within the zone of conflict. The EU calls on all parties involved to show restraint and to defuse tension in the zone of conflict. Full implementation of the demilitarisation agreements, which were reached in the Joint Control Commission in the past, remains of extreme urgency.
  3. The EU underlines the need for the parties to meet at all levels, including in the Joint Control Commission, in order to restore confidence again and to proceed on the way towards peaceful resolution of the conflict, based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, EFTA countries Iceland and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

*Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
