State Secretary Finz at EU Conference on Lisbon Strategy in Budapest

Alfred Finz, State Secretary at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance, attended a conference in Budapest today organized by the Hungarian Economic and Social Committee in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). At the conference, held in the Hungarian parliament building, a joint communication to the EU Spring Summit regarding the Lisbon Strategy was adopted, and State Secretary Finz outlined the expectations of the Austrian Presidency as regards the Summit. Other participants and speakers included EU Commissioner for Taxation and Customs, Laszlo Kovacs, as well as the EESC President, Anne-Marie Sigmund, and the President of the Hungarian Economic and Social Council, Sandor Demjan.

In his address, State Secretary Finz stressed that the promotion of growth and employment is currently the most urgent task faced by national and European politicians, and will thus be the central topic at the Spring Summit. Conferences such as this, he added, are particularly important because they enable an open debate on possible solutions to the EU's common economic challenges.

Finz outlined several central questions to be addressed at the Spring Summit: "How can we achieve a research quota of 3% GDP by 2010? How can we strengthen the approximately 23 million SMEs which offer almost 75 million jobs and thereby form the backbone of the European economy?" In addition, the coordination of the reform programmes with the framework programmes in the Cohesion Area, and the involvement of social partners, will be key topics at the Summit.

State Secretary Finz's address (in German) can be found at www.eu2006.at.
