Support for programmes in the area of youth, citizen participation, culture and consumer protection is one of the pillars of the European Union. The "Youth in Action" programme, which was negotiated under the chairmanship of Youth Minister Ursula Haubner, was adopted unanimously by the Council yesterday in Luxembourg.
The aim of the "Youth in Action" programme is to develop cooperation in the field of youth policies in the European Union. The focus is on voluntary work within and outside the EU, support for youth facilities, youth exchanges and hence increased mobility for young people. This is intended above all to promote active citizenship and tolerance among young people, particularly with a view to strengthening the social cohesion of the European Union.
"I am pleased we have been able to put down another important marker for participation and active citizenship for Europe’s youth during the Austrian Presidency", Ursula Haubner said.
