Presidency Statement on the extension of the house arrest of opposition leader and Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi

The Presidency of the European Union deeply regrets the decision of the Burmese government to extend the house arrest of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and deplores that international appeals, including that of the EU on 26 May 2006, have once again gone unheard.

This decision must be seen as yet another sign that the Burmese government is unwilling to compromise and to move in the direction of an all-inclusive democracy.

The Presidency of the European Union reiterates its call on the Burmese government to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners and to engage all political and ethnic forces of the country in a genuine dialogue with a view to bringing about true national reconciliation and the establishment of democracy.
