Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union welcoming the arrest of two terrorist leaders by the Bangladeshi authorities, with alignment of third countries of 16 March 2006


 

The EU welcomes the recent arrest by the authorities of Bangladesh of two suspected terrorist leaders, Siddiqul Islam, alias Bangla Bhai, and Abdur Rahman. This is a significant achievement, which demonstrates Bangladesh's strong commitment to the fight against terrorism. The EU calls on the authorities to ensure that these individuals will be brought to justice in an open and transparent manner.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

 * Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
