Declaration of the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the presidential elections in Costa Rica on 5 February 2006

The European Union welcomes the successful holding of presidential elections in Costa Rica on 5 February and extends its warm congratulations to President-elect Oscar Arias Sánchez. The Costa Rican people have, once again, proved their strong commitment to democratic values and institutions.

President-elect Oscar Arias Sánchez is an internationally respected personality who is well remembered for his strong commitment to the peace-building process in Central America in the nineteen-eighties. The European Union believes that his broad political experience and high international recognition will contribute to the success of his mandate.

The European Union also recognises the efforts towards economic and social reform undertaken by the Government of President Abel Pacheco.

The European Union looks forward to cooperating closely with the government of President-elect Oscar Arias Sánchez and to strengthening its ties with Costa Rica, at both the bilateral and regional levels, in particular through its support to Central American integration.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
