Declaration by the Presidency on the Referendum in Montenegro

The Presidency welcomes the agreement reached by the government and the opposition on the modalities for the proposed referendum in Montenegro. The referendum process has thus been provided with the necessary legitimacy and sustainability.

In this respect, the Presidency commends the outstanding efforts and successful initiatives of Ambassador Miroslav Lajčák, who has been fully supported by all EU member states throughout the mediation process.

Together with other relevant international institutions, the European Union stands ready to continue its constructive contribution to the best-possible preparation of the referendum. It urges all political forces in Montenegro to continue to co-operate with each other and to ensure that the organisation and the conduct of the referendum is accepted throughout Montenegro. This is crucial to the future political stability of Montenegro and the region as well as to the pace of its movement towards the European Union.
