Declaration of the Presidency on behalf of the EU on the Pamuk trial

The European Union welcomes the decision of the Turkish court to dismiss the case against Orhan Pamuk on 22 January 2006. At the same time the EU reiterates the EU’s continued concern at other charges related to the expression of non-violent opinions still pending in Turkish courts.

The European Union hopes that this decision will guide the Turkish judiciary in similar cases and stresses the importance of adherence to the standards enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights on freedom of expression and of continuation of reforms in this respect.
