Presidency Statement on the detention and sentencing of Mr Alexander Milinkevich

The Presidency of the EU has learned with dismay of the arrest by the Belarusian authorities of Mr Alexander Milinkevich and his sentencing to 15 days of imprisonment because of an alleged "active participation in an unauthorized event". The Presidency is of the opinion that Mr Milinkevich exercised the fundamental right of free assembly and free speech.

Austria as Presidency of the European Union recalls the European Council Declaration of 24 March. The Presidency reiterates the European Union's demand to immediately release all political detainees, including Mr Alexander Milinkevich and Mr Alexander Kozulin, who has been detained since 25 March.
