Federal Budget

Federal budget expenditure and revenue

Social security and the promotion of education, science and research account for a large proportion of the budget in Austria. Compared with the rest of the EU, Austria allocates an above average share of spending in the social sector to pension provision and family support.

Spending on education, science, research and development has high priority. The budget is therefore geared to ensuring future growth. While EUR 7.5 billion was spent on research and science in 1999, this figure had risen to approximately EUR 9.3 billion in 2005. A further EUR 30 million was added to the budget to achieve the Kyoto objective, making an additional EUR 60 million available for environmental protection in 2005.
