OSCE Permanent Council No. 588

EU statement on Tajikistan

1. The EU has learned that the broadcasting of BBC World Service radio programmes on FM frequencies has been suspended in Tajikistan since 11 January 2006, apparently  because the World Service has not fully complied with new regulations for the re-registration of its operations in Tajikistan.

2. According to the BBC, it has not received any official written notice concerning  the suspension of its transmissions. The BBC also believes that it would normally take up to six months to comply with the new registration requirements.

3. The European Union calls upon the Tajik authorities to allow the BBC to resume the broadcast of its programmes during the process of registration.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia [1] and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, EFTA country Iceland, member of the European  Economic  Area,  as  well  as  Ukraine  and  the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

[1] Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
