EU statement on the death of Mr. Altynbek Sarsenbaiuly in Kazakhstan

The EU was saddened to hear of the death of the prominent Kazakh opposition figure Altynbek Sarsenbaiuly on the 13th of February. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Mr Sarsenbaiuly’s family and friends.
The EU hopes that an immediate, full and transparent investigation will be conducted into the circumstances of Mr. Sarsenbaiuly’s death, as well as the deaths of the two other persons who accompanied him. The EU extends its condolences to their friends and families as well.
The EU would be grateful to be informed about the results of the investigation.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

*Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
