Reden, Interviews

20.02.2006

Rede von Minister Platter zur Eröffnung des ESVP-Orientierungskurses (Englisch)

Your Excellency,
General,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear participants,

Welcome to the ESDP Orientation Course.

I sincerely regret being unable to welcome you in person, but I know about the great interest this ESDP Orientation Course has attracted and I am delighted that the audience of the course is composed of participants from so many different countries and international organisations. Your presence today is the most obvious testimony to the importance of this course and the issues it addresses.

It is the first course in the framework of the newly established European Security and Defence College (ESDC) which is open to third states and international organisations.

The establishment of the European Security and Defence College has been a crucial step towards creating common training of civilian and military personnel in the field of European Security and Defence Policy. From my point of view, the opening of its Courses to third states and international organisation can be considered as a further important step. It gives a new dimension to the ESDC as a training institution that significantly contributes to greater transparency of ESDP and a better understanding between EU Member States and third states.

Austria, holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, has strongly supported the idea of opening ESDP Orientation Courses to participants from non-EU Member States and international organisations.

And of course, it is a great honour and pleasure for Austria to host the first “open” ESDP Orientation Course.

The Orientation Courses do not only provide an excellent opportunity for civilian and military personnel to get an insight into European Security and Defence Policy - they are also a platform for exchanging ideas and discussing current security issues.

I am convinced that the participation of third states and international organisations will constitute an important added value in this respect.

Learning together and, above all, from each other will strengthen our relations and help develop further the process of mutual understanding.

To conclude, I would like to thank you for your participation and wish you all a very successful and interesting course.
